A Little History of St Aidan’s

The first services in Lindisfarne were held in the School Room, Beltana, in the late 1890s. After many meetings and fund raising events, the foundation stone of St Aidan’s was laid by the Right Reverend Robert Snowdon Hay on 25 April 1925.

On 7 March 1926 Bishop Hay dedicated the church at a celebration of Holy Communion with 104 communicants. The sanctuary and chancel were in a temporary annex of timber and asbestos until July 1962, when adding the nave and the offices completed the Church.

On 31 August 1979 the debt was paid off and the building formally consecrated by Bishop Davies.

St Aidan’s Church, Lindisfarne celebrated its 75th anniversary with a morning Service of Thanksgiving at on Wednesday 7 March 2001.

Bishop John Harrower gave the sermon, and of the 160 who attended, several took an active part. The Mayor of Clarence, Kathy Edwards opened a display of memorabilia, organised by the Lindisfarne Historical Association and St Aidan’s, for viewing during the week.

On the following Sunday 66 people took part in a family service.
