A parishioner’s recollections on St James Church, Montagu Bay
When I first started attending church at Montagu Bay, St James church was housed in two army huts joined together and situated on a block of land at the eastern end of the Hobart Floating bridge. The decision was taken to build a new bridge (Tasman) and our block of land was acquired to become a works area.
The building that is St James today belonged to the Congregational church and an agreement was made to share their church building with the army huts transported to present site to be used as a hall.
With the money used from the sale of the land another block was purchased diagonally opposite the present church. Later when the opportunity came for us to purchase the land and building in Loinah Rd, this block was sold and money used for the purchase.
Nov 1st 1965 a meeting of Congregational Church members of Montagu Bay was held to discuss the future of their church.
Feb 1st 1966 Mrs Kelly reported that there had been a meeting of the rector (Rev Fred Reeves), Mr Wilson and Mr Wills with members of Congregational church in December. The Congregational members stated their appraisal of the value of church and land. This was in excess of parish assessment. It was now up to us to make an offer to Parish Council who would pass it on to the Diocese and from there pass it on to Congregational church.
April 5th 1966 Purchase of Church - bought from Congregational Union for 200 pounds. The church was consecrated by Bishop Robert Davies on St James Day 25th July 1980
